•Using BA as the mixture reduces the cost of butanol production.•BTE was significantly increased of all BA blends.•10% of BA blend showed slightly improvement in BP.•NOx, CO emissions and EGT were decreased for all BA-diesel blends.•BA seems attractive renewable green energy as fuel additive for CI engines.
