Evaluation of alternative approaches for landscape-scale biomass estimation in a mixed-species northern forest

•The biomass model performed poorly due to a weak basal area: height relationship.•Using LiDAR metrics in Random Forest models gave low R2 but moderate RMSE.•Moderate imprecision in plot georeferencing had little impact on model performance.•Fixed and variable radius plot designs gave similar estimates of stand structure.
