•Irrigation modified the water balance, with constant discharge through the year.•Around 35% of applied nitrogen leaves the watershed as NO3− leaching.•There was no significant build-up of salts in soils.•PO43− leaching was not significantly enhanced by irrigation.•Sediment and PO43− concentration and yield were related.
