The capacity configuration of energy storage devices not only affects the power supply reliability of an isolated microgrid, but also directly relates to its economic operation. In allusion to an isolated microgrid which includes typical loads, a hybrid energy storage system (HESS) and renewable energy resources, a new quantum-behaved particle swarm optimization (QPSO) is proposed in this paper to optimize the capacity of the HESS. A rational energy scheduling strategy is also put forward. Additionally, a mathematical model is established which the lowest daily cost of HESS is taken as the objective. A case of an isolated microgrid in north China is used for verification. The results indicate that the above proposed energy scheduling strategy could play the complementary advantages of two storage components more adequately. And comparisons between QPSO and traditional particle swarm optimization (PSO) are made by analyzing the configuration results, which proves that using QPSO algorithm can find the optimal solution more quickly and save the daily cost of HESS.
