Hydrophobization of chitosan films by surface grafting with fluorinated polymer brushes.

•Chitosan films were modified by “grafting from” polymerization followed by esterification reaction with a fluorinated compound.•Easy handling experimental conditions by ARGET ATRP were used.•Hydrophobic chitosan surfaces with low surface energy were obtained.•These water-resistant chitosan films could find applications in green packaging.
