•We developed a privacy-preserving protocol for AMI.•The protocol is shown to preserve consumer privacy, confidentiality, and integrity.•Time-of-use billing and fine-grained data analysis are supported by the protocol.•The protocol makes use of the existing Grid infrastructure.•The protocol utilizes a trusted third party outside of the Grid infrastructure.
