•Relation of βγ-crystallins with Ca2+ has been reviewed.•Lens βγ-crystallins have evolved to have reduced Ca2+-binding ability as compared to their invertebrate homologues.•Acquired disability in Ca2+-binding is a structural requisite for lens βγ-crystallins.•Residual affinity of lens βγ-crystallins for Ca2+ may be important in Ca2+ homeostasis within lens.
