Development and assessment of a low cost sensor for solar heat flux measurements in buildings

•A new type of low cost solar sensor is proposed.•The sensor measures total solar heat flux on a surface.•The sensor calibration procedure relies on a simplified 1D thermal model.•Measurements with the sensor and a pyranometer were compared.•Results obtained by the sensor showed good agreement with pyranometer results.
