Diagnostic model for assessing traceability system performance in fish processing plants

•In this paper we introduce a model to diagnose traceability system in food processing.•The main factors in the model are contextual factors, traceability system design and execution.•Complex contextual factors put high demand on the design and execution of traceability system.•The model uses grids to assess the level of complexity of each factor.
