•Do words simply point to concepts or do they play a role in constructing them?•Words activate concepts more effectively than equally unambiguous sound cues.•We aim to understand this label advantage.•We argue that unlike all other cues, words are “unmotivated cues”.•Compared to motivated cues, words activate concepts in a more categorical way.
