•Contrary to the consensus, 10-year-olds do not use retrieval when they solve additions.•Problems as simple as 2+3 are solved through counting strategies.•Traditional conclusions from the predictive power of problem features are misleading.•Classical markers of retrieval can also reflect counting procedures.•Expertise in addition consists in an acceleration of procedures until automatization.
