•Carbon steel corrosion in non-aqueous ionic liquid ([P14666] [Br]) electrolyte.•Gamma-irradiation results to less corrosion, forming protective oxides.•Substantial corrosion is seen in the absence of gamma-radiation.•A corrosion mechanism is proposed for the observed results.
