Modeling strategies for effectively routing freight trains through complex networks

•New model for routing and scheduling of freight trains on complex networks.•Model reduces problem by aggregating sections of the track and approximates travel time on the aggregated nodes.•Efficient heuristics to obtain initial routing and scheduling decisions for real sized network.•Proposed heuristics show a reduction of around 20% of travel time.•Sensitivity analysis explores the impact of aggregation on accuracy.
