Optimal control of greenhouse climate using minimal energy and grower defined bounds

•A novel framework for minimizing energy input in greenhouses was presented.•Optimization was performed for one entire year of data from a commercial greenhouse.•Using standard settings, heating and cooling were potentially reduced by 47% and 15%, respectively.•Active cooling was used on days in which CO2 was a limiting factor.•Changing the bounds can have potential effects on both energy and CO2 input.
