The performance of the expanded programme on immunization in a rural area of Mozambique

•Vaccination is the most cost-effective specific public health measure.•The DTP3 (3 doses of DTP vaccine) coverage was 76% in Mozambique in 2011.•We randomly sampled under-five children from Taninga to assess vaccination coverage.•Vaccination coverage in Taninga was very high, despite a low socio-economic status.•The EPI performance in Taninga is encouraging for rural Sub-Saharan settings.
