•We discuss consumer’s potential health risks associated with candle emissions.•We measure the release of VOC, SVOC and PM from scented candles in test chambers.•We model and estimate consumer’s peak and TWA exposures to candle emissions.•Consumer exposure estimates are compared to air guideline values or toxicity levels.•Exposures are discussed in context of known candle uses and background exposures.
