Processing inferences at the semantics/pragmatics frontier: disjunctions and free choice.

•We present the first processing studies of free choice inference.•We compare free choice with scalar implicatures.•Free choice is fast to derive (contrary to scalar implicatures and to prominent linguistic models).•Processing results place new constraints on theoretical accounts of pragmatic inferences.
