•We carry out a literature review to identify gaps and foster insight into the current context.•We review the application of mathematical models in the strategic and tactical COSC context.•To find a solid systematic review, our methodology and taxonomy are discussed.•A full vertical and horizontal integration should be taken into account.•Environmental impacts, global factors, and uncertain and nonlinear parameters require more research.
