•HSV-2 shRNA-containing HSV-1 had no effect on the acute HSV-2 disease.•HSV-2 shRNA-containing HSV-1 had no effect on the acute virus shedding.•HSV-2 shRNA-containing HSV-1 significantly reduced cumulative recurrent lesion days.•HSV-2 shRNA-containing HSV-1 significantly reduced the number of days with recurrent disease.•HSV-2 shRNA-containing HSV-1 significantly reduced HSV-2 load in the DRG.
