•Two modified citrus pectins (MCP) were attained by UV/H2O2 treatment at pH 4 and pH 10.•A linear homogalacturonan-rich pectin MCP4 was attained at pH 4.•A highly branched rhamnogalacturonan-I-rich MCP10 was attained at pH 10.•MCP10 showed higher in vitro anti-inflammatory and anti-proliferative activities.
