GEOMETRY COMPRESSION WITH MPEG-4 BIFS IN TELEPRESENCE SCENARIOS

Sensors at a remote teleoperator environment can capture large amounts of 3D points that represent the geometry of the re- mote environment. One way to display this data to the op- erator is to construct polygonal meshes from sensor data and transmit all polygons to the operator display. Fast data through- put is necessary for teleoperation, but the network's band- width may limit the uncompressed transmission of vertex and connectivity data. This work proposes the use of MPEG-4 BIFS as underlying scene graph and compression tool to re- duce network load without additional performance cost for compression.
