Transient Stability Improvement of Wind Farm Using STATCOM and Series Dynamic Braking Resistors

Nowadays,single lumped mass wind turbine generators have been the main research object;in order to better analyze the transient characteristics,a two-mass fixed speed wind turbine generator is modeled and the corresponding transient characteristic is analyzed.The models of two-mass fixed speed wind turbine generator,direct current control static synchronous compensator(STATCOM) and wind turbine series dynamic braking resistors(SDBR) are constructed in this paper.The effect on improving wind farm transient stability and realizing low voltgae ride-through(LVRT) ability by using STATCOM alone and using SDBR alone is theoretical deduced and analyzed,and the application range and limitation are also given in this paper.So a method by using STATCOM and SDBR together applied in wind turbine generators is proposed in this paper,which could improve transient stability of fixed speed wind turbine generator.Simulation examples show that the transient stability of fixed speed wind turbine generator such as voltage recovery and speed rejection of fixed speed wind turbine generator after grid fault can be achived,and even low voltage ride-thorugh ability can be realized.
