Gnesi's current research interests are in the area of Software Engineering, concentrating on the application of formal specification and verification methods and in the area of requirements engineering. In the former the application area is in particular in the railway domain. In the latter the focus is on ambiguity detection in Natural Language requirements, looking at variability aspects in the case of requirements for Software Product Lines.
She has been chair of the ERCIM-FMICS working group from 2002 to 2005, deputy chair of the Formal Methods Europe (FME) association and member of the IFIP WG 1.3 - Foundation of Systems Specification. She is member of the editorial Board of the International Journal on Software Tools for Technology Transfer, Springer and she has been program chair of several conferences and workshops in the area of formal methods.
