Luca Chittaro is a full professor in the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science of the University of Udine, where he heads the HCI Lab, and gives three courses (Human-Computer Interaction, Advanced Human-Computer Interaction, Mobile and Wireless Systems). His major research interests are in the area of human-computer interaction (particularly in information visualization, persuasive technologies, mobile interaction, virtual reality, adaptive interfaces), and he has been chair (2004-2008) of ACM SIGCHI Italy, the Italian Chapter of ACM SIGCHI (Special Interest Group on Computer-Human Interaction). In the past, he worked for several years in the area of artificial intelligence (particularly in diagnosis, temporal reasoning, qualitative reasoning). He is author of more than 150 scientific papers in international journals and conferences. He is Coordinator of the Scientific Board and member of the Executive Board of GRIN (the italian association of university professors in Computer Science). He headed one of the research units in the GRIDCC ("Grid Enabled Remote Instrumentation with Distributed Control and Computation") project (2004-2007), and one in the EUROTEV project (2004-2008). Both were financed by the European Union as STREP projects under the 6th Framework Program. He has been principal investigator of the project "Adaptive, Context-aware, Multimedia Guides on Mobile Devices" (2005-2007), financed by the Italian Ministry of University and Research as a project of relevant national interest. In this project, he coordinated three research groups (Universities of Pisa, Turin, and Udine). He is principal investigator of the project "Advanced emergency medical services for the disabled based on innovative ICT technologies"(2008-2011), financed by the Friuli Venezia Giulia region. The project involves several partners, including a rehabilitation hospital, medical emergency services, and associations of people with disabilities. He has been principal investigator in three industrial research projects, respectively sponsored by the Benetton Group, the Fiat Research Center, and the Snaidero Group. Moreover, he has been principal investigator of the projects "User Interfaces for the Visualization of Geographical Data on Mobile Devices" (2003-2005), and "Analysis, Information Visualization, and Visual Query in Databases for Clinical Monitoring" (2000-2002), financed by the Italian Ministry of University and Research under the COFIN program (projects of relevant national interest). In the latter project, he coordinated three research groups (Universities of Pavia, Rome "La Sapienza", and Udine). He has been principal investigator of the projects "3D Web Sites for Tourism Promotion" (2002-2004) and "Internet-based Collaborative Virtual Environments for the domain of Experimental Physics" (2000-2002), financed by the Friuli Venezia Giulia region. In the latter project, he coordinated two research groups (Synchrotron Light Source Facility - Trieste, University of Udine).
