His professional interests include the visualization and analysis of large and complex time-dependent data, mainly from real-life industrial processes, engineering, and climate research. This includes spatiotemporal, multivariate (different data attributes or measurements), multimodal (different data sources), and multirun/ensemble data (different parameter settings for the simulation). Moreover, he has worked on the topics of guided visual analytics, explainable AI, comparative, uncertainty, and glyph-based visualization, as well as the tight integration of machine learning and interactive visualization.
Johannes has co-authored surveys on glyph-based visualization as well as the visualization and visual analysis of multifaceted scientific data, which each received over 350 citations by now. He is also a co-author of several articles in prestigious visualization journals such as Computer Graphics Forum and IEEE Transactions on Visualization and Computer Graphics. He has collaborated with researchers and domain experts from various areas such as meteorology, climate research, statistics, or engineering.
