As an Assistant Professor, Department of Radiation Oncology, Thomas Jefferson University, Philadelphia, PA-19107. Dr. Thangavel is a basic and translational cancer biologist with more than 35 publications, most of them are published in high-tier journals. He is currently focusing on the tumor suppressor retinoblastoma protein (pRB) and its deregulation in major cancers including breast, prostate and lung cancers. His lab is currently defining the central role of pRB on cancer metastases in multiple cancer models including complex breast cancer metastasis. The main research focuses on control of breast, lung and lung cancer induced lung metastasis with chemo-radiation therapy in mice models. According to National Breast Cancer Foundation, on an average for every two minutes a woman will be diagnosed with breast cancer and every 13 minutes one woman will die of breast cancer and most breast cancer deaths are attributed from cancer therapy induced cardiovascular toxicities. Historically, multi-agent chemotherapy and radiation therapy are the main components to treating and managing metastatic breast cancer (MBCa). The treatment options have reduced the cancer mortality and increased the number of cancer survivors. According to The New England Journal of Medicine (2013) and others have demonstrated that radiation alone or widely used platinum (carboplatin) as single agent or platinum chemo integrated with radiation induces cardiovascular toxicity, increases the risk for cardio vascular disease (CVD) and certain cardiac deaths during and post therapy. However, this has led to the formation of a new multidisciplinary discipline: “cardio-oncology”. One of the current unmet need at clinics is to develop a novel breast cancer therapy, which can provide a quality life, increased disease-free survival and simultaneously prevent therapy induced cardiotoxicities among patients. Currently, they establishing therapies to protect cardiopulmonary toxicities among cancer patients who receives chemo-radiation therapy. In summary, they are working on controlling 1). Breast cancer 2). Prostate cancer and 3). Lung cancer the tumor through suppressor retinoblastoma protein pRB dependent mechanisms and 4) also controlling developing cardiopulmonary toxicities among cancer patients, who receives chemo-radiation therapy.
