I have been working in the area of technology for linked data and the semantic web, firstly in industrial research, then in commercial companies. Before that, research projects have included distributed object systems and fault tolerant systems.
I am one of the developers of Apache Jena, a leading semantic web framework for Java applications. I contribute in the areas of storage and query of RDF data. Recently, I have been prototyping machine clusters to provide a flexible, reliable and cost-effective high performance, fault-tolerant graph database.
To advance linked data, I was one of the editors of the SPARQL query language specification developed within W3C; my contribution included the SPARQL algebra that defines the semantics of the language. SPARQL became a standard in January 2008. Having created some community agreement around a proposal for SPARQL/Update which fed into SPARQL 1.1, where I was co-editor of the query language specification.
